A Reedsy Review on Creative Collaboration

Working through Reedsy recently gave me one of those projects that reminds you exactly why creative collaboration is such a joy. I had the chance to illustrate a charming, whimsical, and wonderfully quirky picture book that felt magical from the very first read-through. What stood out immediately was the author’s decision to centre the story around an older main character, something we don’t see often enough in children’s literature. Their presence added warmth, humour, and a sense of lived experience that made the whole narrative feel both fresh and meaningful.
From the start, our collaboration felt effortless. The author came in with a beautiful vision, but also a genuine openness to explore visual possibilities together. We spent time sharing ideas, playing with style, and gently debating the little details that help a story find its truest shape. Chris trusted my artistic instincts, and I valued his storytelling insight; it became a real creative partnership rather than a simple hand-off.
One thing I appreciate about Reedsy is how seamlessly they handle all the admin and payments in the background. It meant we could focus entirely on the artwork, world-building, and character development instead of logistics.
All in all, the project was a complete delight, the kind that stays with you long after you’ve sent off the final files. I’m genuinely grateful for the experience and excited for future collaborations just like it.
